Jared and Dante pulled up in front of Peteâs Grocery and parked beside Albertâs truck. There were already two SUVs and two pickups parked to the right of the store. Albert was talking to the men who came up from Beulah, showing them where he wanted them to go. Both Jared and Dante got out of their truck, but only Jared walked over to the others.
âRuff, hereâs the maps you wanted.â Albert took the maps and turned back toward his men, handing one to each. âYou guys know from my map where youâre supposed to go, so take a few minutes and draw it out on your own map so you donât forget.â
Jared motioned for Albert to follow him. As they were walking toward their two trucks, Jared said, âRuff, I know I didnât ask you, but I called Hub Davis and asked him to see if he couldnât take an hour or two and fly over this area in his Piper Cub. He can fly the damn thing at forty or fifty miles an hour and can cover a hell of a lot of territory in a short time. I donât figure the girl will be suspecting a plane looking for her unless she thinks her family and the law in Mussel Ford paid for one, in which case she might fuck up and start waving at the plane.â
Albert nodded, âGood thinking. I hope Hubâs got a phone.â
âGuaranteed he does.â
When they got to their trucks, Jared turned to Dante and motioned him over. âAlbert, this is Dante Sandoval, our partner in Monterrey. Dante, Albert Waters, president and founder of NCFC and Manpower Solutions.â
Dante put out his hand. âMr. Waters, Iâve heard a lot about you. Itâs a pleasure to finally meet you.â Albert, slightly more restrained, said, âDante, thank you for coming all this way. Iâm sorry that weâve had this inconvenience.â
Dante gave a nod and said, âThese things happen. Iâm sorry that Luca Castro put you in this situation. I understand that he will no longer be a problem. My associates and I apologize for sending a man who proved to be so incompetent, but Iâm sure that you and your men will quickly solve the problem that he caused.â
Jared looked at Albert and said, âYou should also know that Dante has an associate who arrived last weekend on the same bus the Delgado girl and the two deceased women were on. Heâ¦â
Dante held up his hand. âJared, please, let me explain to Mr. Waters. Albert, I spoke to my associate, Ramon Castile, about the incident at the convenience store, and he says that there was absolutely no reason for Luca to have taken the Delgado girl off the bus. Neither he nor any of the other men on the bus suspected that anything was wrong in that store. They just assumed that the Delgado girl was with the other two women and was supposed to leave the bus at the gas station. Of course, Ramon knew who Valeria and the Lampe girl were, but he had no idea who the Delgado girl was.
